Many boys and girls come and go making noise in the front of the school. A typical first day: Friends meet each other and talk about the things they did on holiday, teachers see their pupils again. What a great day!! Only one girl feels left out. She is on the opposite side of the street. She looks at the other students and thinks she was better off at home. At her old home. She knows. She must just cross the street and enter the building but her fear is too great. She takes a first step and puts her right foot on the roadway. She is concentrating on the building, she takes another step. Suddenly a car brakes sharply a few centimetres far away from her body. She is frightened, loses her balance and falls over on the sidewalk. A boy sticks his head out through the window and shouts at her: “Are you blind? I could have knocked you down. Be careful!” She watches as the car drives away. But she stays there, she doesn’t get up nor goes to the school. She stays sitting down until someone touches her shoulder. “Don’t you want to go to school today? You’re late”. It is the boy from the car. He smiles at her. “Today is your first day, isn’t it? I don’t know you so you must be new”. She nods. “O.k., let’s go, follow me”. She gets up and walks to the building behind him. “Do you have your timetable?”. She takes out her pocket a wrinkled paper and gives it him. “O.k. You have maths with Ms. Perkins. You’re lucky. She’s really lovely”. They walk along the empty corridors of the high school looking for the right classroom. When they are in front of the door of the classroom 14, he gives her back the timetable and turns round to go away, but before she enters the room, he turns back again and says: “By the way, my name is Caleb” and disappears running.

She knocks on the door and opens it: “I’m sorry, I’m late, may I come in?”. “Of course, come in, my dear”. The maths teacher is really lovely…”I suppose you are Jordan Danielle Matthews, aren’t you?”. She nods. “You can sit down whenever you find a free seat”. She walks between the desks. At the last desk in the row she sits down and takes out her maths book and a notebook. Ms. Perkins continues teaching until the bell rings.

Three hours later Jordan is in the high school café drinking a tea slowly and writing in her notebook. “Hello”, Caleb says sitting down beside her. “How are you?”. She, scared, doesn’t answer and continues writing. “What’s wrong with you? Can’t you speak? Don’t be afraid, I don’t bite”. He smiles and continues: “We haven’t been correctly introduced, don’t you think?” He extends his hand. “I’m Caleb. Nice to meet you”. She shyly shakes his hand. “Nice to meet you, Caleb. I’m Jordan or Danny whichever you prefer”. She smiles and he receives a little electric shock from her hand. He lets go of her hand shaking his one. “I’m sorry. I’m a little bit nervous”, she says. “No problem, Jordan. I like Jordan better”. He smiles again and gets up. “See you later”, he says while he walks away. She only makes a movement with her hand as a farewell.

The first day at the school finishes. When the bell rings, she collects her things and leaves the school building as quickly as possible. Outside Caleb there is with his friends hanging around his car. He sees her and goes up to her. “Do you need a lift?”, he offers. “No, thanks. I can walk home. It’s not far”, she refuses. She goes away, but unexpectedly she turns around to face Caleb. “Do you want to drive with me now?”, he says. “No, I don’t really want to”, she takes his arm and walks with him a short way, away from the others, “A little piece of advice: be careful and stop at the crossing”, she warns. He, totally surprised, nods. She goes away. A few minutes later he loses sight of her. He and his friends get in the car and drive away. Caleb accelerates. At the first big crossing with the main street he brakes suddenly. His friends don’t have enough time to begin to complain. A lorry drives along the intersection at full speed. It collides with a house a few meters further away. Caleb’s friends turn their eyes towards him. “How…?”, one of them begins to say. Caleb is speechless. He puts in first gear and drives away. One hour later they are still talking about the accident and the luck of their driver… Caleb is quiet. He is thinking.

During the rest of the week nothing unusual happens. Finally the week comes to an end. At last it is Friday. In the morning Jordan is on the opposite pavement in front of the school again, but now she is not afraid. She looks as if she is waiting. Caleb pulls up in his car and stops right beside her. She smiles. “Good morning, Caleb. How are you?”, she says, smiling. “Fine, thanks. Eeeehh… Jordan? Do you have some time, I’d like to talk to you”, he says. She nods, “But during the break, in the café. See you”. She walks around the car and runs towards the school.

The day seems endless, even the time until the break seems too long. Caleb is impatient. Jordan is very calm. The biology teacher is a very interesting person. He explains the parts of a cow’s stomach with such grace. After that, physics. What a boring subject! And finally the last lesson before the break: gym. Jordan is really tired after this class and outside the sun is shining. She sits on the grass, stretches her legs and leans on her elbows. She closes her eyes and enjoys the sun. “Hello?”. Caleb’s face is just over hers. She tries to get up too quickly, falls and hits her head on the ground. “Ouch”, she moans. “Are you o.k.?”, Caleb asks, worriedly, ”Did you hurt yourself? I’m sorry, but you weren’t in the café and I asked…”, he explains, “Oh!! I forgot”, admits Jordan, “Sorry. Do you want to go now? I must change, but in few minutes I’ll be with you. Will you wait for me in the cafe?”. He nods and she disappears behind the changing room door. Caleb walks through the building to the canteen. It is full of people. All the tables are taken. He decides to wait for Jordan at the café door. She comes back, has a look inside and shrugs her shoulders. “Let’s go out”, she proposes, “It’s too noisy here”. He tilts his head on the right indicating the way. They walks up to a little old playground. The high school used to be a primary school. She sits on a swing and he, on the grass. “ Can I ask you a favour?”, she says, he nods and she continues, “I need a part-time job, but I’m new in this town and I don’t know where to look for one”. He is thoughtful for a moment. “O.k., no problem, but first I want to know how you were able to warn me about the accident on Monday?”. She stays silent and looks away. The bell rings, calling the students to return to their classes. She gets up and so does he. But before they go in, she turns around. “O.k., I’ll tell you”, she takes a deep breath and looking at the ground, she explains, “I simply saw it. I saw the accident. Sometimes I can see things before they happen. That’s all”. She walks into the building and goes towards her classroom. Caleb catches up with her. “Thank you. I didn’t know it was difficult for you. Do you want to meet me after class? I’ll phone a friend whose father owns a ice-cream shop. I’ll ask him if he has a job for you. Maybe you’ll be lucky”. He winks at her and says goodbye. She is surprised, he is not afraid of her. She enters the classroom and tries to pay attention during the next three hours, but it is not easy. Especially when the remaing lessons are double maths and chemistry.

Y hasta aquí llega el primer episodio de “New Girl”.
